Thing 23-Final Thoughts
August 29, 2010
This has been a journey and like any journey, it hasn’t been about the final destination, but about each little step and new discovery along the way. I’m excited about what I’ve learned and accomplished and how I can use this knowledge to teach and help others. I am grateful that I chose to take this course in the summer when life is a little slower and I could spend more time exploring and applying what I’ve learned. Many thanks to Shelley for providing a user friendly course and to Debora, my coach, for her encouragement.
Next steps… The journey isn’t over yet. I plan to continue learning new technologies and sharing them with friends along the way.

Thing 22-Social Networking
August 29, 2010
Although I have felt occasional urges to check out Facebook, I have resisted them so far. I see the possibilities for staying connected and reconnecting, but honestly I know I don’t have the time and I think the temptation would be too great to resist. There have been privacy issues that have surfaced at school and a social networking policy was put in place. There is certainly incredible potential for quickly disseminating information, thoughts, and ideas. My daughter’s small group leader at church was having difficulty staying connected with her group of high school girls. She’d call, but then complain that they would never call her back. They suggested that she join facebook and voila, the communication issue was resolved. The girls are still connected and most of them are at different colleges. I don’t think that would have happened without something like facebook.
I have really only seen Facebook used for social interactions, not learning or collaborating, so it was interesting perusing Classroom web 2.0. I made my way around easily. The “How to Start List” was very helpful, but my lap top wouldn’t let me view the video. I discovered it was easier to find topics that interest me when I went to Forum and then categories. I also found myself clicking on the various faces and viewing their profiles and comments.
I haven’t observed an effective use of Twitter. I’ve only seen people following others who share relatively uninteresting information about their daily lives. As time goes on, the use of this communication skill may change. I really believe that it has the potential for information overload.
